Know Your Learner

If you think of your student as a tree, then you know you are only seeing part of the picture. The roots, as large as the tree itself, are hidden from view. The roots could be thought of as the hidden self: the part of a person that is personal and hard to explain -- or they could be compared with the past experiences and family history. Either way, you are only seeing the public self of your learner and there is more, so much more to every person than what we see. Like trees, learners are looking for inspiration and light and whether they show it or not, all learners need to be fed and nurtured.
