Recycling Trash to Make Art

I really love the idea of using what is normally discarded in order to make sculptures.  Here are some very impressive art pieces that I found on the web.

We are going to have a contest this spring in honor of Earth Day of who can make the best sculpture out recyclable materials.  I'm really excited about it.  So I'm starting to research the topic.

It seems that a combination of plastic containers, light bulbs, colorful mesh fabric, and eating utensils can make wonderfully cute creatures.  The robots shown have working lights which would be very hard to do but they are made out of pots, pans, and plumbing equipment.  They were probably welded together which would be out of the question for our contest.  Most people will be using normal adhesives like tape and glue.

I'm starting to save broken toys like slinkies and good quality cardboard boxes and nice looking plastic containers.  When you add a little Ajax powder to tempera paint, it sticks to glossy cereal boxes.  I need to find a good place to store these items because they will really start to build up.  The place to keep them won't be outside because it rains or snows every other day.
